dakar-seriesNa het annuleren van de 2008 Dakar rally, lanceerde de ASO inderhaast de Dakar Series. Er lagen plannen klaar om in 2010 een eigen rally raid serie op te starten, als concurrent voor de FIA Rally Cross Country kampioenschap. Het eerste evenement was in 2008 de Central Europe Rally, later gevolgd door de PAX Rally in Portugal. In 2009 heeft de ASO de Silk Way Rally die door Kamaz op gestart wordt geadopteerd als de ASO Central Asia Rally

De Silk Way Rally zal op 5 september van start gaan in de Tartaarse hoofdstad Kazan, wat de uitvalsbais is van het Kamaz rally truck team, en op 13 september finishen in Ashgabat, de hoofdstad van Turkenmistan. Tussendoor zal de rallykaravan de Russische steppe, het uitdagende Kazachstaanse landschap en de slopende Kara Kum woestijn doorkruizen. Negen etappes zal de moderne uitvoering van de middeleeuwse zijde route tellen, met een totaal van 4.356 kilometer, waarvan 3.208 getimede proeven. Gastheer Kamaz pakt zelf ook spectaculair uit met 10 (!) wedtrijdtrucks.

De ASO heeft het plan om het FIA Cross Country kampioenschap te verdringen door tegelijk met de FIA evenementen haar eigen rallies te houden, om zo deelnemers bij de FIA weg te houden. De grote teams kiezen liever voor de ASO, om verzekerd te zijn van een goede behandeling tijdens de Dakar rally.
